  • Can FDI be bad for growth?

  • Author: Quan Minh Quoc Binh (2012)

  • We find a curious negative casual relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and total factor productivity growth (TFPG) across the world for the period 1996-2009. The relationship is robust to specifications in which we instrument for FDI using lagged values and geography variables as well as when we control for country and year fixed effects, human capital, the size of government, and other country differences. We hypothesize that not all FDI are the same as channels for technology transfer. We find that higher natural resource extraction accounts for the negative relationship between FDI and TFPG. For countries with no natural resource exports, 10% higher FDI causes 0.7-1...

  • Data envelopment analysis for analyzing technical efficiency in aquaculture: the bootstrap methods

  • Author: Le Kim Long (2020)

  • The paper adopts the bootstrap procedures for data envelopment analysis to analyze the technical efficiency in the Vietnam’s intensive white-leg shrimp farming. The results demonstrate that the null hypothesis of constant returns-to-scale is rejected in favor of variable returns-to-scale for the production technology. Moreover, the potential improvement is greater using bootstrapping than that achieved by using the conventional data envelopment analysis, which has been widely adopted in the aquaculture literature for technical efficiency estimation. By adopting the double bootstrap proposed by Simar and Wilson, the bias-corrected technical efficiency is 0.69 and at the 95% confidence ...

  • Demographic factors and economic growth: The bi-directional causality in South East Asia

  • Author: Vo Tan Thanh Diep (2016)

  • This study has demonstrated new evidence sustaining the idea that variation in demographic factors is an important determinant of growth in per capita income. Using an panel dataset from 1990 to 2013 at the country-level in the Southeast Asia, this study is conducted to analyze the following two key areas. First, the prevalent of a number of the demographic factors impact on the economic growth. Second, the bi-directional causality is revealed among: (i) the population growth and the economic growth; and (ii) the life expectancy and the economic growth. Furthermore, the two new econometric techniques, Driscoll and Kraay estimation, and structural equation model are applied. Finding fr...

  • The determinants of self-medication: evidence from urban Vietnam

  • Author: Nguyen Trong Hoai (2017)

  • This study examines the primary determinants of self-medications among urban citizens in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam using survey data. Employing logistic models, the article finds that the probability of self-medication is positively associated with the respondents’ high school degree or vocational certificate, married status, and income while it is negatively related to employed status, the number of children, the geographical distance from home to the nearest hospital, doing exercise, and living in a central region. Meanwhile, using Poisson models the article finds that the frequency of self-medication is positively associated with the respondents’ high school and vocational, married...

  • Author: Nguyen Trong Hoai (2015)

  • This research is funded by Vietnam National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED) under grant number II4.5-2012.09
\r\nIn the last decades scientists around the world have come to a consensus that the survival of humanity is threatened by rising climate changes if people continue to consume and produce in the same way as it has been. According to different analyses including those commissioned by the World Bank, Vietnam is among the countries to be heavily impacted by a rise in sea level caused by the melt of Northern and Southern ice caps. Therefore, as a member of the global community, the Vietnamese government and people must also share the responsibility ...

  • Economic growth: the role of knowledge economy in the context of selected Asian countries

  • Author: Nguyen Van Dung (2017)

  • This study examines the role of different knowledge economy com-ponents in economic growth as well as the simultaneous effects of information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure, education, and innovation on economic growth of selected Asian countries over the 1990–2014 period, using Driscoll-Kraay estima-tion method and seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) and three stage least squares (3SLS). The results confirm that there exists a positive association between economic growth and four components of the knowledge economy framework. Furthermore, there is also evidence of the multidimensional effects of ICT infrastructure, edu-cation, and innovation on economic growth. As...

  • Effects of social capital on credit access of farming households in Vietnam

  • Author: Nguyen Trong Hoai (2014)

  • Social capital is considered as an influential factor in economic transactions, including credit access. The research aims at testing relationships between components of social capital and credit access in Vietnam’s rural areas. The testing is conducted with binary logistic and multinomial logistic regression models. The results show that formal social network reduces possibility of getting access to formal credit, and households with wider formal social networks are likelier to belong to the group with access to semi-formal credit than the group with access to formal credit. Such conflicting results may come from specific characteristics of credit market in Vietnam’s rural areas.

  • Knowledge economy: analytical framework and policy implications for Vietnam

  • Author: Nguyen Trong Hoai (2014)

  • The paper presents an analytical framework and indicators measuring progress of the knowledge economy according to the knowledge assessment methodology introduced by the World Bank. Estimations of Vietnam’s progress to the knowledge economy show that Vietnam has made great efforts to build the knowledge economy, especially by developing information and communication technologies. However, the gap between Vietnam’s knowledge economy and other economies in Asia as well as the world is still wide, especially in such pillars as institutional regime, education, and development of innovation. Vietnam, therefore, should adopt uniform policies on an overall and profound reform in education an...

  • Orientations to the development of Vietnam’s supporting industries between 2015 and 2020

  • Inheriting extensive experience of foreign countries together with secondary data adopted in a qualitative research study, this paper addresses the orientations and solutions to the development of Vietnam’s supporting industries (SIs) between 2015 and 2020. Apart from identifying barriers to and/or limitations of policies on their development, the findings pinpoint five SIs worthy of notice for mechanical appliances, plastics and rubber, electrical/electronic equipment, textile and garment, and leather and footwear. To drive these along their right track, priority should be given to consolidating the organization in support of SIs’ development, cultivating support for premises and acc...

  • Ownership feature and firm performance via corporate innovation performance: does it really matter for Vietnamese SMEs?

  • Author: Nguyen Van Dung (2017-09-28)

  • The study investigates the simultaneous relationship among ownership concentration, innovation, and firm performance of the SMEs in Vietnam during the 2011 - 2015 period by employing a Conditional Mixed Process (CMP) model. The findings show that (i) there is no impact of ownership concentration on innovation, but it has a positive impact on sales growth; (ii) innovation positively affects firm performance; (iii) there exists positively reverse causality from sales growth to innovation. The policy implications insist on facilitating SMEs with easier access to capital via loans with preferred interest or trust loans without collateral, training programs for the labour force and SME lea...

Analyses show that Vietnamese SIs are very small and unable to help the manufacturing sector increase its added value and join the global value chain. The results find the following culprits: the plan and policies on SI development are not compatible with main trends of market specialization and global value chain; chain of domestic industrial production is till lacking; and inter-industry cooperation is poor. Policy recommendations, therefore, are as follows: establishing the exact list of SIs that help increase the added value of local industr...
