  • A framework of significant human resource management practices in Vietnam

  • Author: Tran Kim Dung (2017-10)

  • This paper aims at conceptualizing a framework of human resource management practices (HRMPs) that will work effectively in Vietnam. qualitative research is applied, based on a survey of 388 companies located in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. HRMPs in Vietnam can be measured using seven criteria. Apart from the four traditional HRM functions, which are recruitment selection, training development, performance appraisal and compensation, HRMPs in the Vietnamese context involve three additional criteria: leading change and motivation, both based on traditional soft practices, and talent management, which is based on contemporary hard practice. The validity and reliability of the HRMPs has be...

  • Abnormal loan growth and bank risk-taking in Vietnam: A quantile regression approach

  • Author: Ho T.H. (2021)

  • We empirically investigate and present evidence of nonlinearity and heterogeneity in the impact of abnormal loan growth on risk-taking in the Vietnamese banking system between 2007 and 2019, using a quantile regression method. Our results showed that abnormal loan growth initially helped banks to reduce risk-taking. However, this relationship was U-shaped and heterogeneous. The effect of abnormal loan growth was more significant for banks at the upper tail of the risk-taking distribution. Our findings also demonstrated that the turning point of abnormal loan growth increased throughout the risk-taking distribution. Hence, our findings suggest that the pursuit of excessive lending is m...

  • Abnormal returns and idiosyncratic volatility puzzle: an empirical investigation in Vietnam stock market

  • Author: Vo, X.V. (2020)

  • This paper aims to examine the relation between idiosyncratic volatility (IVOL) and stock returns with full-sample and conditional alpha sub-samples in Vietnam stock market covering the period from January 2008 to December 2018. We test the IVOL effect on stock returns employing Fama-Macbeth regression method (firm-level analysis) and sorting portfolio method (portfolio-level analysis). In addition, we use different approaches to estimate IVOLs which are the standard deviation of the residuals estimated from regression based on capital asset pricing model (CAPM), Fama-French three-factor model and Carhart four-factor model. We find the IVOL effect which is considered as IVOL puzzle in...

  • Academic qualifications and work experiences: their impact on employability

  • Author: Elbert Bryan R. Vidal (2016-11-11)

  • Employability is a controversial topic, particularly in Danang. Currently, two perspectives believed to enhance employability are academic qualification and working experience. Some people believe that getting many academic diplomas and obtaining higher educational levels are really helpful in strengthening a person’s employability. Meawhile, others think work experiences play more important roles on making a person employable. This study will enlighten the readers about the reality of the discourse on academic qualifications and working experiences and their relationship to employability. The study is confined geographically to Da Nang City – one of Vietnam’s major cities.

  • Academics’ perceptions of challenges of a peer observation of teaching pilot in a Confucian nation: the Vietnamese experience

  • Author: Nguyen, P.V. (2020)

  • This paper discusses academics’ perceptions of challenges during the implementation of peer observation of teaching (POT) for promoting teachers’ reflection and teaching improvement. This qualitative case study involved 11 academics teaching English at a university in Vietnam. Data were analysed inductively and thematically. Several challenges were identified: limited learning from observing junior peer teaching and junior peers’ feedback, uncritical feedback from peers without closeness, lack of sensitivity in giving feedback, and limited time for POT. These findings suggest that a strong peer relationship in a Confucian culture appears to be key for successful POT.

  • Accounting asymmetries in the long-run nexus between globalization and environmental sustainability in the United States: An aggregated and disaggregated investigation

  • Author: Ahmed Z. (2021)

  • In recent years, the number of studies on the relationship between globalization and ecological footprint is steadily increasing, yet the literature lacks any formal consensus. Previous studies unveil beneficial as well as harmful effects of globalization on the environment. Furthermore, most of the scholars rely on linear methods to investigate this relationship, which can produce biased outcomes when non-linearities exist in data. Unquestionably, the United States played a leading role in increasing global connectivity; however, the present US administration has demonstrated not only a penchant for isolationism by keeping certain critical resources, technologies, and manufacturing c...

  • Accounting comparability and cash holdings in Vietnam

  • Author: Nguyen L.T. (2021)

  • The management of cash requires careful considerations to allow firms to benefit from proper resource allocations while mitigating agency issues. Accounting comparability can play an important role in tackling information asymmetry and agency cost, thus enabling managers to hoard more cash. This research aims to investigate the link between accounting comparability and cash holdings in an emerging market. Using a sample of listed firms in Vietnam from 2010 to 2019 and System Generalized Method of Moments, the study finds that comparability is positively associated with corporate cash holdings, confirming the value of the former as an effective governance mechanism. • Author: Tri Tri Nguyen (2019)

  • Previous studies show mixed evidence of the role of banking expertise on the board of directors on accounting conservatism. In this paper, we add to this growing literature by providing an innovative way to measure banking expertise based on life-time working history in banks of all individual directors on the board. We find that accounting conservatism is negatively affected by banking expertise on the board. Also, the results indicate that banking expertise on the board has a more pronounced impact on accounting conservatism when firms have high bankruptcy risk and when firms have high financial leverage. The evidence has some implications for boards of directors.

  • Author: Le H.T.T. (2021)

  • This study investigates the impact of accruals quality (AQ) on the cost of debt. Using a sample of Vietnamese listed companies during the period 2012–2017, we show that AQ has a significant negative relation with the cost of debt. Particularly, the 10% best AQ firms enjoy a 1.35% lower interest costs than the 10% worst AQ firms. Furthermore, the discretionary AQ component has a significant negative association with the cost of debt, while innate AQ shows an insignificant impact on the cost of debt. The study delivers an important message to firms regarding the economic benefits of providing high-quality accounting information.

Poverty in rural areas, especially in the informal and non-agricultural sector, is several times higher than it is in cities. The fact that previous poverty reduction programs hardly concentrated on the poor community working in this sector has influenced policy with regard to the aspects of economy, social justice and the benefits of the policy enjoyed by the inhabitants. To reduce poverty sustainably in the coming years, the Government needs to approach the problem from another angle which focuse...

Adaptation is the predominant practice that farming communities undertake to deal with these climate-induced challenges. While significant attention has been devoted to farmers’ adaptation strategies, little is known about how innovative practices are associated with the improvement of rural livelihoods. To address this gap, the paper attempts to investigate how farmers lead the process of rural innovations that constitute successful forms of adaptation to address the mixed impacts of dyke policies and climate change in two distinct agro-ecological zones (i.e. flooding and salinity) in the Vietnamese Mekon...

  • Author: Thanh D.N.H. (2021)

  • Euler's Elastica is a common approach developed based on minimizing the elastica energy. It is one of the effective approaches to solve the image inpainting problem. Nevertheless, there are two major issues: the Euler's elastica variational image inpainting model itself is multiparameter, and the performance of methods for solving the model is not high. In the article, we propose an adaptive Euler's elastica image inpainting model by combining with adaptive parameter estimation based on the smoothed structure tensor. To implement the model, a numerical algorithm based on the discrete gradient method is developed. The experiments showed that the proposed image inpainting method outperf...

  • The 2008 financial crisis: stock market contagion and its determinants

  • Author: Kimberly F. Luchtenberg (2015)

  • In this paper, we investigate worldwide contagion and its determinants during the 2008 financial crisis. Utilizing an international sample of returns from 2003 to 2009, we consider both uni- and bi-directional contagion. After controlling for crisis-related volatility, we find strong evidence that cross-market linkages increase among many financial markets. In contrast to previous crises, contagion following the 2008 global financial crisis is not confined to emerging markets. The United States and other mature financial markets in the sample transmit and receive contagion. Country markets are less influenced by regions than they are by other country markets. We also construct variabl...
